  1. Best-selling writer Michael Crichton died yesterday, his family has confirmed. The Jurassic Park author and ER creator had been quietly battling cancer, his loved ones revealed, but they are calling his death at the age of 66 unexpected.
  2. Amy Winehouse's husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, was released from Britain's Edmunds Hill Prison yesterday after serving 12 months of his 27-month sentence for causing grievous bodily harm and obstruction of justice.
  3. Ellen DeGeneres says she is "saddened beyond belief" by the passage of California's Proposition 8 banning gay marriage. In a statement to The Associated Press, DeGeneres said that she, "like millions of Americans, felt like we had taken a giant step toward equality" by electing Barack Obama as president. But with the passage of California's Proposition 8, "we took a giant step away." DeGeneres contributed $100,000 to fight the amendment on Tuesday's ballot. She married actress Portia de Rossi in August.
  4. Simon Cowell admits that his recent split from longtime girlfriend Teri Seymour was prompted by her desire for a family. "She wants a different path in life, and I totally respect her for that," the American Idol judge told Fox News. "I have never said that I want children or marriage," he added. "I know some people find that hard to fathom, but it's me, it's who I am."
